Toddlers

The toddler room is for the children aged twenty months to three years.  It is divided into two areas, the little toddler room and the big toddler room.  The child: staff ratios are one member of staff for every three children under two years, and one member of staff for every four children for those over two years of age.

In the toddler room, the day is divided up with plenty of child initiated play, and an adult led activity throughout the day, which is planned in response to the children interests, as well as ensuring a balance across the curriculum.

We follow The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).  The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together the Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage (2000), the Birth to Three Matters (2002) framework and the National Standards for Under 8s Daycare and Childminding (2003).

This creates a coherent and flexible approach to care and learning for all children under five years of age, which became compulsory in September 2008.

The EYFS is used in our daily planning and evaluation of learning activities and the care that we provide.  We also use the areas of learning and development to observe and assess each individual child.  The areas of learning and development are as follows:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication, Language and Literacy
  • Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy
  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World
  • Physical Development
  • Creative Development

We record your child’s learning and development throughout the EYFS in their own scrap book, which contains photographs, creative work and observations of their ‘Learning Journey’ at nursery as well as sharing with parents and carers all the fun things they have enjoyed doing.

These are continually available to share with parents and carers in our ‘Communication Cupboard’.  We also hold Parents Evenings where they can be shared.

At the end of each day, staff will give you a ‘My Happy Day’ chart.  This includes information about the days activities, what and how well they have eaten, if and how long they slept for as well as any other information about their day.

Each child in the room has a coat peg, a spare clothes bag, a bed bag (if they have a sleep) and a nappy basket in the bathroom, if they are in nappies.  This means that items can be left at nursery, and do not need to be brought in each day.

The toddler room is the room that the children’s toilet training usually develops. The parents and the child’s key person work together to establish the right time for this, for the individual child’s needs.

Some Client comments...

Absolutely delightful environment, happy and fun along with wonderful staff
Staff encourage the children to feed themselves and to use a cup without a lid, getting them ready to move to toddlers.
